Dance is a very powerful drug

“Dance is a very powerful drug, Mr. Keane. If embraced judiciously, it can exorcise demons, access deep seated emotions and color your life in joyous shades of brilliant magenta that you never knew existed. But, one must shoulder its challenges with intrepid countenance if one is ever to reap its rewards.”
- Marilyn Hotchkiss
In the movie “Marilyn Hotchkiss’ Ballroom Dancing and Charm School”

One does want a hint of color

Today, all I really want to do is watch Birdcage.  Perhaps many times.

There are several million classic lines in this movie, but for today, let’s go with this one:  “One does want a hint of color.”  One really does.

Les émotifs anonymes

Yes, okay.  Oui, ca va.
Je comprend.

Stranger than Fiction

Do you ever feel as though your life is being narrated? Or as though you may want to turn to Dustin Hoffman for metaphysical advice?  Then this little gem of a movie is one of your new best friends.  The luminous beings that appear in this movie are:  Will Farrell, Tony Hale, Emma Thompson, Dustin Hoffman, Maggie Gyllenhaal and Queen Latifah!!  I mean.  And another major character of the luminous being variety?  Sixties architecture.  Yum.

Darjeeling Limited

Darjeeling LimitedPretty, pretty movie, the Darjeeling Limited.  That’s just how Wes Anderson rolls.

So, a fellow Parks and Recreation devotee blogger posted this photo montage to Tumblr — doesn’t this just make you want to go to there?

I remember when Kenny and I went to see Darjeeling at the Byrd Theatre in Richmond, we floated out of the theatre and immediately headed after the soundtrack.  One song in particular:  Where Do You Go To, My Lovely?

It was always about the dance

You know that, don’t you, Scott Hastings?

Maybe the Ballroom Dancing Federation doesn’t have any new moves.

And you’re bored with the old ones.  Aren’t you, Scott?

Wouldn’t you rather dance your own dance now?  Wherever your feet want to go?

Take Polaroids of Your TV Screen

Lucas dancing | Empire RecordsTake Polaroids of your tv screen while Lucas dances, black eyes, black hair, black turtleneck, lanky Lucas, while he dances, no tripod, no vertical hold, no pause, just you leaning sweet into Lucas. Make 1,000 copies on photo glossy, staple gun each glossy to a telephone pole every mile from here to New York City. Arrive breathless.

You may quibble, saying who is this Lucas, I don’t know him? I’ll say does it really matter, you know what I mean by black eyed boy, surely? The kind you slip into a diner with late, as you’re driving, and you’re covered with road? You’re stopping so you can see his hair in any kind of light but star? The kind of man takes you the long way? And you let him?

Photograph of Lucas in “Empire Records.”  Prose poem by moi, written back in the days of Polaroids.

Little Miss Sunshine

I just had my Little Miss Sunshine moment with some lovely adobe colored overpasses in Albuquerque. My camera was busy playing the perfect song (Bob Dylan and the Band singing “Too Much of Nothing”) so I didn’t try to take a picture with it too.
